Terms of service
Effective October 2, 2026; last updated October 20, 2026 (applies to LeafTrove 1.3)
By using LeafTrove you agree to these terms. Apple's standard end user licence agreement also applies to the app licence. Mandatory consumer rights where you live are not limited by these terms.
1. The service and its operator
LeafTrove is provided by HSIHSUN HO (HoMade Works); contact: brad.ho.2026@gmail.com. LeafTrove is an iPhone and iPad app that helps people who use a Kobo eReader organize their notes. It offers import and pairing, syncing of highlights and notes, search, daily review, favorites, My thoughts, tags and collections, notifications, widgets, export and account management. The app interface is available in Traditional Chinese, English, Japanese, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish; the computer assistant and the menu on the eReader are currently in Traditional Chinese.
2. Relationship with Kobo and compatibility
LeafTrove is an independent third-party app. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Rakuten Kobo Inc. “Kobo” is used only to describe compatibility. Help and troubleshooting are available for every Kobo model; which functions can be used depends on the model, the firmware and the results of checks. If you run into a problem, please report your model, firmware version and the error message; this does not require a subscription or a trial. Only text highlights and notes from EPUB/KEPUB books are supported; PDF, handwriting and whole-book transfer are not. You must still comply with the terms of Kobo, your e-book providers and applicable law.
3. Computer assistant and device setup
First-time setup for Wi-Fi wireless updates requires a USB data cable. On an iPhone or iPad with USB-C, you can complete setup directly in LeafTrove; other devices can use the HoMade Works assistant for Mac or Windows to set up a supported eReader over USB. Both assistants can be downloaded directly from the support page. A Microsoft Store version is also available for Windows; it is updated separately from the website and may be a different version, and the ZIP on the website is not signed. The assistant can export a .leaftrove file with notes and the covers that are available, for LeafTrove to import; JSON import is still supported. A USB-C iPhone or iPad can read the eReader directly without a computer; for a Lightning iPhone or iPad we suggest the export web page. Model and system requirements are on the support page.
Free import, rereading, My thoughts, collections, the small widget and one reminder a day need no sign-in or subscription and are not uploaded to LeafTrove servers automatically; to add new notes, read or export again. Before writing anything, the computer assistant backs up data and settings (not a complete system backup), and it is designed not to delete original books, highlights, notes or reading progress. A disconnected device, damaged storage, a firmware change or third-party modifications can still cause failures. Please eject safely as the assistant instructs and keep the backup.
4. Your account and your content
Use your own Apple account for Sign in with Apple and Wi-Fi wireless updates, and protect your device and export files whether or not you sign in. You keep the rights to your own notes and to content you may lawfully use, including the thoughts, tags and collections you create in LeafTrove, and you are responsible for making sure that syncing, sharing and exporting do not infringe anyone else's rights. Highlights from books, covers, author details and metadata may be protected by copyright, trademark or contract; LeafTrove does not acquire those rights by providing a tool.
“My thoughts” that you write in LeafTrove are stored on the device and are not included in device backups. Keep them safe with iCloud sync (subscription) or “Thoughts backup”, especially before removing the app or changing devices. The backup file is not encrypted; please store it safely.
5. Subscription and free trial
The LeafTrove subscription comes as a monthly or a yearly plan with the same features: Schedule for review, note tags, iCloud sync across devices, up to 5 reminders a day, medium-or-larger and Lock Screen widgets, and Wi-Fi wireless updates on compatible models. Prices in Taiwan are NT$60 per month and NT$490 per year; people who subscribe to the yearly plan by December 31, 2026 get the launch price of NT$390, which stays the same when they renew. New subscribers who are eligible under Apple's rules get a one-month free trial, once per Apple account in the subscription group; the actual price, currency and eligibility are those shown on Apple's purchase sheet, and a trial that has started is not extended automatically. Apple charges your Apple account, and the subscription renews automatically every month or every year, depending on the plan, unless you cancel in your Apple subscription settings before the end of the current period. You can switch between the two plans in your Apple subscription settings; the change takes effect at the next renewal date. Turning off automatic renewal does not end a period you have already paid for; your entitlement follows the expiry or revocation state confirmed by Apple, and restoring purchases, billing and refunds are handled by Apple's systems and policies. Deleting your LeafTrove account or the app does not cancel an Apple subscription. Manage it in iOS under Settings → your name → Subscriptions; if you do not want a trial to renew, Apple recommends cancelling at least 24 hours before it ends. See Apple's guide to cancelling a subscription.
Each LeafTrove account includes 50 MB of cloud content space for book details, highlights, thoughts and favorites, and can link one Kobo at a time.
People who were already using LeafTrove on a device before version 1.2 keep Schedule for review, multiple reminders and every widget size on that device, as shown in the app. Note tags, iCloud sync and Wi-Fi wireless updates still require a subscription.
Buying, restoring and using on-device subscription features do not require a LeafTrove account. You may later choose to sign in and link the personal Wi-Fi cloud service. Signing out of LeafTrove does not end an active Apple subscription or on-device paid features. Your App Store purchasing account and your LeafTrove account created with Sign in with Apple serve different purposes.
6. Sync, reminders and external services
With direct cable reading and export files, you update the content yourself. Wi-Fi wireless updates require you to start the upload from the sync menu on the Kobo and then open the app to update; it is not real-time sync. iOS decides when iCloud sync happens. Thoughts, tags and collections exist only in LeafTrove and are never written back to the eReader. Cloud sync depends on the eReader, your mobile device, the network and third-party services all working normally. Network interruptions, a sleeping device, changes to the source, system scheduling or service maintenance may cause delays. Notifications, Today's pick, Schedule for review and widgets are aids; they do not guarantee a fixed time, content quality or reading results. Covers and other external content are provided subject to the availability and terms of their own services.
7. Export, sign-out, suspension and deletion
You are responsible for keeping your export files. After a subscription expires, content already on the device can still be read, searched and exported, and existing tags are still shown and searchable but cannot be added or changed; iCloud sync and Wi-Fi wireless updates stop. Signing out clears that account's cloud cache and credentials on this device; synced cloud content and Kobo links are kept, and “My Library” on this device is not affected. Unlinking a Kobo only archives its source, and the content is not deleted automatically when the 30-day protection period ends or the subscription expires; you can explicitly and permanently delete an archived source in “Data & Storage”. Once a cloud account deletion is accepted, that account's cloud reading content is removed and the Apple authorization is revoked through a separate process; this cannot be undone. Signing out and deleting the cloud account do not delete “My Library” on this device or the original e-books and notes on the Kobo. Removing the app deletes the library and thoughts on this device, but it does not delete your cloud account or cancel a subscription; see the local data guidance before clearing device data or reinstalling. The service may suspend individual functions or accounts for security, maintenance, abuse, legal requirements or supplier limits, and will give reasonable notice and a chance to export where necessary.
8. Prohibited conduct
You must not access another person's account or data without authorization, circumvent security or subscription limits, distribute malware, interfere with the service, or use LeafTrove to infringe intellectual property, privacy or other rights. The service may be restricted or stopped if you do.
9. Service quality and liability
We maintain the service with reasonable care, but cannot guarantee that every device, network or third-party service will always work without error. To the extent the law allows, HoMade Works is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, and its total liability arising from LeafTrove is limited to the LeafTrove fees you paid in the 12 months before the event. This paragraph does not exclude liability that cannot be excluded by law, including for intent, gross negligence, personal injury, statutory warranties or mandatory consumer liability.
10. Governing law, disputes and changes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of China (Taiwan), without affecting the mandatory protections where you live. Where the law allows, the Taiwan Taipei District Court is the court of first instance; where mandatory law allows you to bring a dispute where you live, that law applies. Material changes will update the effective date and be notified through the app or the website; continuing to use the service after a change means the new terms apply. These terms exist in Chinese and English; if they differ, the Chinese version prevails.
